Re: West Coast Surcharges

Dear NASA Members:

Given the current situation regarding congestion at all West Coast Ports, TACA has announced that effective November 9, 2002 they are implementing a $500/teu congestion surcharge. In addition to the congestion issue, the steamship lines are talking about implementing a Panama Canal Surcharge in the amount of $100/container effective November 1, 2002.

NASA, through its partner JF Hillebrand, is trying to mitigate these charges to whatever extent possible. At this stage, nothing formal has been imposed or agreed to regarding merchandise shipped through the North American Shippers Association. We will continue to fight for the best interests of our members, but we thought it was important for you to know what has been announced in the general market. Should the situation change we will notify you accordingly.

We would also like to take this time to update you on the labor negotiations. The information is still subject to a media blackout, but what we do know is that both sides met with the Federal Mediator individually this week. They are scheduled to resume joint negotiations next week. We will keep you apprised of new developments as soon as we know.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,
Judy Mannix, Administrator
North American Shippers Association
