Re: ILWU/PMA Negotiations as of July 26, 2002
Dear NASA Member:

The ILWU formally rejected the PMA contract offer made last weekend, then conducted a two-hour rally at the PMA offices in San Francisco. The two sides did, however, agree to another 24-hour contract extension.

Union spokesmen indicated that the ILWU would make some kind of counter proposal during talks next week. Below is the Press Release with PMA's reaction to the union's rejection of their offer:

San Francisco, CA (July 24, 2002) – The Pacific Maritime
Association (PMA) today learned that International Longshore and      Warehouse Union members had rejected its contract offer. In      response, PMA Director of Contract Administration Jack Suite issued      the following statement:

“We are disappointed that the ILWU rejected an offer that was      substantial, fair and met the most significant of the union’s contract      demands. PMA’s offer would have increased overall compensation by      17 percent; provided for the key issue of maintenance of health      benefits; and guaranteed jobs to all currently registered ILWU      members. This was a premier offer for union members who already      enjoy one of the finest wage and benefits packages in the nation.

”NASA will continue to monitor the situation closely and we will keep you advised of any new developments as quickly as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you require any further information.
