Re:

Boston Barge Service suspended eff 8/16/10, Genoa port strike

Boston Barge Service suspended as of August 16, 2010

Be advised that Columbia Coast Transport, the barge service provider to Boston from the ports of NY/NJ will suspend the Northern Service indefinitely due to low volumes and profitability on the service. The last barge service scheduled to call Boston is on Monday August 16, 2010.

This will affect shippers previously routing cargo all-water to Boston port via NY/NJ; there remains only one carrier, MSC, that ships directly to Boston port and this service is only from Europe. All other carriers and cargo origins ship to NY/NJ ports directly and will require intermodal service to final destination. JF Hillebrand can provide trucking alternatives to Boston; please contact your regional sales representative to discuss your routing options.

Italy: Genoa Port Strike

Be advised that stevedores and longshoreman at Genoa port went on strike for 8 hours on Monday August 9th and will continue to strike 2 hours per day following. According to one report this is in protest to radioactive containers found at the port. We will continue to update as we have more information.
