Re:

USA Weight Limitations

General Cargo Weight Limits in the USA:

In the interest of public safety and to comply with applicable laws, JF Hillebrand USA will not participate in the transportation of any container that exceeds applicable over the road weight limitations. The general weight limit for North America is 80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight (tractor, chassis, container, and cargo) with proper weight distribution (federal axle weight limits are 17,000 lbs for single and 34,000 lbs for tandem axles).

The general cargo maximum weights by container type/size are as follows:

• 20' Dry

34,000 lbs / 15,420 kgs

• 40' Dry/High Cube

44,000 lbs / 20,000 kgs

• 20' Reefer

32,000 lbs / 14,515 kgs

• 40' Reefer

42,000 lbs / 19,051 kgs

These weight limits can be further restricted by equipment (sleeper tractors for long-haul transport for example). Special tri-axle chassis may be available for additional weight maximums where special state permits are applicable. For any overweight questions please contact our intermodal department or your local drayman.

It is the responsibility of the buyer or consignee to ensure that the gross vehicle weight complies with the applicable weight regulations in the USA. Reworking charges for any overweight container are also the responsibility of the buyer or consignee.
