Re:

Argentina – Road to Chile

Recevied below regarding situation in Argentina due to winter weather factors:

For shipments originating in Argentina and sent to destinations via Chilean ports (Valparaíso or San Antonio), be advised that due to the winter season there can be delays in crossing the border between both countries.

Roads connecting Mendoza to Chile pass through the Cordillera de los Andes (3000 meters above sea level), and occasionally the transit is interrupted due to snow or ice accumulation, and the local authorities decide to close the roads.

Daily traffic is around 600 to 700 trucks. This implies that even with reduced interruptions (3 or 4 hours), not all of them are able to cross under the estimated schedule.

This situation usually starts by May and lasts until the end of September.  Since it is due to weather factors, it becomes unpredictable and is difficult to be controlled.

It is then important to define with anticipation the plans for stock / goods sourcing, either considering the alternative option to ship via Buenos Aires port, or assuming a potential miss of the expected vessel.

Our office receives official reports on a daily basis, issued by both countries road authorities. But again, the fact of the road being opened does not necessarily mean a regular flow of trucks.

We remain then at your disposal, in order to analyze together a successful coordination of your shipments.
