Re:

LOS ANGLES/LONG BEACH/OAKLAND TRUCK STRIKE - 5/1/04

Dear NASA Member:

Trucker Strike Continues over Rising Gas Prices.

While trucking resumed on Saturday 05/01 in Los Angeles and Long Beach, this is not so for Oakland. The entire port area in Oakland has come to a stop due to the continuance of the trucker strike. The protests are concentrated on both the port as well as the rail ramp. At this time, cargo is not being accepted in Oakland until the situation at the pier is resolved. Union Pacific has stopped accepting cargo bound for the ports of Los Angeles and Oakland to avoid a pile up. The railroad states that this embargo will continue until the protests end or a resolution has been reached.

Although the steamship lines had given us extended receiving until this morning, due to the continuation of the protest there is a fair chance that the containers which were not turned in on Friday were not turned in today. We are expecting this to last until Wednesday, but at this point this is pure speculation since we are receiving conflicting information.

Best regards,
The North American Shippers Association
