Re: Potential Strike Announcement for Vancouver

Dear NASA Member:

There is a potential strike looming in the Port of Vancouver. The labour problems are caused by a breakdown of negotiations with the Foremen's union. This is a relatively small (500) and well paid group who will have the right to strike as of 12:01 AM Tues morn Aug 12. As any strike action requires 72 hours notice, it is unlikely that they will immediately go out-but a possibility. We are attempting to remove all containers which have arrived this week prior to any problems.
Vessels will likely divert to Seattle, should this occur.
Montreal and the rail system is not affected via the E. Coast.
It would be prudent to maximize the E. Coast route to Vancouver for the next week or until the issues are settled.

We would not anticipate a long strike as the major issues have been agreed with he Foremen. As well a contract with the longshore labour has recently been ratified.

We will keep you well informed of any new developments concerning this issue. If you have further questions please contact this office.

Best regards,
The North American Shippers Association
